My Nicotine+ And Soulseek Experience So Far 2023-08-23
So, rather than watch streaming services I collect mostly westerns and noirs. They're pretty old, and companies generally don't bother enforcing the intellectual property rights on them. Problem is, since they are not current or popular, they are also often hard to find. Torrents works sometimes, but there are plenty of good films I simply do not have access to. They're not on those streaming services, and nobody is sharing them off. Then, somewhat recently, someone suggested I try Soulseek. It is kind of like the Kazaa, Limewire, or Gnutella of old. There is/was an official client, but my understanding is that it is basically abandoned and everyone just uses Nicotine+ now. So, I tried it.
Now, the idea with a network like this, is that you probably do not want to be a dick. Downloading everything you can get your greasy paws on and not offering anything for upload is considered a dick move. So I shared off 300+GB of old movies. I then started to download a few. One of the people I downloaded off of apparently checked out my list of shit and downloaded something off me. I thought to myself that whatever I am doing must be okay. Then he kind of disappeared. It seems as though he is logged off, but I had a funny feeling he blocked me. You know, the kind of thing you would do to a dick. Then, today someone sent me my first private message. Here's how it went.

So, as near as I can tell, this fellah wanted me to use Paypal to buy a music CD for $136.32, rip it to audio files, and send it to him. Then when he figured out I wasn't planning to do that he figured he'd try to insult me and block me. I can only assume he wanted to block me so I wouldn't have access to whatever goldmine of music he is sharing. Or am I wrong on that? To be honest, so far Soulseek doesn't appear to be a very welcoming place, even for someone who has plenty of not-so-easy-to-find media. I'm thinking that going back to good old torrents might be the best way to deal with Soulseek. :-(
