First off, I don't actually believe in souls... the title of this post is meant to be "funny" or "dramatic" and not "accurate to within 16 decimal places", so let it go. Anyways, I was recently reading this post at How-To Geek when I found myself thinking "Hey, I like not having cruft. Hell, any lack of general crap is a good thing right? I should totally try this out.". So I downloaded the LTSB version of Windows 10 and installed it. In case you're too lazy to read all that crap, it basically describes the LTSB version of Windows 10 as:

Now, this isn't my first time installing Windows 10, so I kind of knew that it might try to access a few web sites while installing. Actually, the last (and only other) time I tried this was an upgrade rather than a fresh install, but I was pretty sure I would see at least something I didn't like. So I went on my caching DNS server and started monitoring the queries as they flew by. Funny, there were plenty of DNS queries by this fancy new Windows 10 box before I had much of a chance to tell it not to enable all of its junkware. The installer did ask me a few questions about what I would like to turn off and I answered all the questions by clicking the "No, turn that crap off" button. Do any of those stand out for you? How about s1.symcb.com? Did you know that domain is owned by Symantec? What about watson.telemetry.microsoft.com? Why would it need to do that if the first opportunity I had to turn off telemetry I told it to turn off telemetry? Shouldn't that make it turn off telemetry instead of actully USE it? What about live.com? I didn't give it a Live ID, so why is it trying to access a server that seems to be for logging in to a Live ID account? What about the ipv6 stuff? I don't have ipv6 enabled on my network... why would it keep trying to access ipv6 related stuff?

Now I didn't really spend much time researching all the different names and frankly, it doesn't matter. There is no way any installer for any operating system should be accessing a plethora of servers without asking you or informing you at all. Now there are ways to turn off most of this junk and even more, but that requires having the OS already up and running. The bottom line is that Windows 10 is the "Most Tracky Version Of Windows Yet!" so either start trying to dump the Windows Beast or accept that you really should not bitch about privacy issues or bloat issues because you're just too complacent to care. Hmmm, you really don't care though do you? You're perfectly fine with the fact that hardware and software are locked in a race to see who can be the least efficient while still selling the most eh?
